New Years Top Picks 2015

The holidays are beginning to wind down and I cannot believe that New Years Eve is right around the corner. I’ve always looked forward to celebrating NYE because it’s a chance to get all gussied up and spend the evening with your closest friends ringing in the new year. With that being said, you want to stand out amongst your friends and other party goers wherever you’re celebrating. So on the blog tonight I wanted to share some of my own NYE inspirations featuring dresses from Rent the Runway.

This blog post is 100% my own opinion and not endorsed by Rent the Runway in any way.

The looks I’ve selected for my New Years Top Picks are inspired by a mix of shimmery and statement-making details. I wanted to select pieces that represent a variety of styles and would look great on every body shape and size. What I love about the Rent the Runway service is they cater to all bodies regardless of the models wearing the dresses in the photos. Even better, they recently began offering plus-sized options for many of their designer dresses. No longer are the days where the only options for anyone larger than a size 6 are stuck with frumpy and unflattering dresses. I’m a proud size 14 and I love all of the dresses I’ve rented thus far ranging from my own bachelorette party to wearing a gown for a black tie wedding.

Look number one is a Tibi Confetti Sequins shift dress. Shift dresses are perfect options for slimmer body shapes because the dress is loose from the bust to your waist. It offers a lot of movement and would be a comfortable option for a night out on the town. The green and gold sequins adds that shimmer note, which is perfect for NYE.

Pair with some black tights and cute black heels to finish your look. (Always remember when wearing tights to opt for a covered-toe heel.) Feel free to add minimal accessories such as gold or green toned bangles or earrings to match the colors in the dress - but this dress speaks for itself!

For look #2 I chose a Parker Tegan Dress that adds some edge with this 100% leather mini. It reminds me of Angelina Jolie’s dress at a recent red carpet event for her movie Maleficent (see here) and earlier at the Mr. and Mrs. Smith premiere (see here).

It’s a more modest option with a high crew neckline and a square cutout back. This is another dress that makes a statement all by itself - simply pair with black strap heels and keep the accessories simple. I love the balance of sophistication and edge! Guaranteed you’ll be the only one rocking leather on NYE.

Minis look great for those with long and lean legs to show off! The fit and flare style makes it perfect for those with wider hips and thighs and it being fitted through the bust to the waist, it’s a great number to show off my fellow ladies with a figure.

I LOVE this look (#3). Simply put, the dark navy with the overlaying lace takes this Cynthia Rowley Midnight Lace Romper to the next level for a NYE get-together. Another feature of this romper is that it has hidden pockets! I love me some pockets especially for a night out.

The romper is the perfect alternative to the go-to dress for a NYE event. Not to mention rompers have been one of this seasons most popular trends. This style tends to be more attractive and flattering for the petite woman, in my opinion. However, a full-length romper can be very flattering for my fellow curvy ladies who have a bit more in the hips and thighs (I mean, Nicky Minaj can ROCK a full-length romper - proof).

Play with the navy and black combination with your heels and accessory choices for this outfit. I love the idea of going with chunky rings (as seen on the model) or bangles to pull it together.

Look #4 proves that even modest dresses can be beautiful and flattering. Don’t feel like you need a short hemmed dress and obvious cleavage to get the room’s attention. The golden sequin details of this Badgley Mischka dress are absolutely captivating that you can’t help but notice. The boat neckline and cap sleeves gives this dress a softer and more feminine look. I love the hidden zipper and the little cutout of the back. This dress reminds me of champagne and will for sure be noticed no matter where you go for the night.

This option is another dress that looks flattering on any body type and size. Since I am fuller in the bust, the neckline is perfect for keeping the ladies tucked in and in control. The waistline accentuates a fuller or slimmer figure and the flare of the bottom allows for easy movement and all night wear without irritation.

This has been the official color for fall and why not break it out into the new year? Look #5 is an Ali Ro Spiced Dress that incorporates the fit and flare style with a sweetheart neckline. The burgundy and black jacquard material gives you the shimmer and shine that’s a perfect addition to the theme of the evening. It also features a boned bodice, which I’m a huge fan of in dresses. It helps keep the structure of the dress and those with fuller busts will appreciate the extra support.

A fit and flare style makes up the majority of my top picks for a good reason. It’s flattering for most body types and for an evening where you’ll be (or should be!) dancing all night it allows for comfortable movement - especially when sitting down. You can wear this dress by itself or for chillier evenings I like to pair with black tights. Not to mention tights are great accessories that make your legs look slimmer.  Keep your other accessories minimal and let your colorful dress be in the spotlight.

Lastly, look #6 of my top picks is a ML Monique Lhuillier above-the-knee asymmetrical dress. I love the sequin design on the bodice and the fullness of the skirt. The asymmetrical design of the skirt is flirty, fun, and different from other hemlines you’ll see on NYE.

The skirt is black cotton faille (a material made originally from silk that has a ribbed texture) and paired with the sequins up top oozes sophistication and sexiness. Wear with sexy strappy heels to pull your overall look together. I recommend silver drop earrings (as seen on the model) or a statement ring. With boat necklines you never wear necklaces and with the sequins on the bodice you won’t have to.

So, regardless if your plans on NYE span from a simple house party get-together or an all out bash at a local hotspot, hopefully some of these options have inspired the look your hoping to achieve. NYE is the perfect time to experiment with bolder, more eye-catching, styles that you maybe wouldn’t normally wear. Take risks and don’t be afraid to be noticed!

Shameless Product Plug Alert...
Rent the Runway is an amazing service and I am so happy to have found it for many occasions that have popped up this past year. I had my own bachelorette party and quite a few weddings to attend that were black tie affairs. If you’re not familiar, Rent the Runway takes designer dresses and accessories and makes them available to the average woman. Rarely do I ever find myself in need to purchase a formal or cocktail dress for hundreds of dollars that I’ll maybe only wear once or twice (if I’m lucky). Also, if I can keep it real for a sec, I fluctuate in weight from year to year so it’s never guaranteed that I’ll even fit in said purchased designer dress.

After hearing about RTR from a friend I tried it out and it’s a huge game changer. For the price of your rental you get:

  1. to choose the length of your rental from 4 or 8 days depending on your needs.
  2. a free second size in the same dress as a backup. AND if your backup size isn’t available they give you a special discounted rate for another dress.
  3. great customer service. If anything isn’t up to par, they work with you to get the dresses you need in time.
  4. showroom locations if you prefer to try on in-store! More and more RTR showrooms have been popping up. You can find them in Las Vegas, New York City, and now Georgetown in D.C.
  5. easy transactions. In your box you’re given a prepaid shipping envelope that at the end of your rental you just drop off at your local UPS store. Easy peasy.
Those are just some of the great pros of joining RTR! Consider using my referral link when getting your first RTR dress :)
